Life is boring. Do you agree? Many people today seems to think so. Movies and too much TV shows bring about a sense of excitement for the past, when explorers would venture into dark tunnels, and tribesmen would battle large elephants for their meat. Even 'recently', there were exciting endeavours to shape a small country into what we know as Singapore. As the human race progress, life just seems to get more and more meaningless, eventually falling into a lame routine. Or so many think.
Looking back through the pages of history textbooks, one can find many, many pictures of the toils and sweat of our 'forefathers'. They say our state of living has improved over the years, but has it? Those sceptics have said life is mundane; it has veered for the worse since times when people would lives in small villages. Why?
Now, the average man wakes up on an average day, and proceeds into a mindless routine: brush up, eat breakfast, go to work, go to lunch, and then back to work for the rest of the day until sundown. Then, they proceed home to shower and have dinner. Finally, they go to bed to prepare for almost the exact same day tomorrow. And for the working hours, most average man would be staring at a computer screen, churning out walls after walls of texts. Now that sounds pretty boring i say.
But what exactly makes it so different from those from the past? Some say that in ancient times, you do a variety of stuff. Today, you might be hunting wild beasts, and tomorrow, you might be swimming in the rivers for salmons. Another day comes and you might find yourself more than enough time to gaze up at the stars on a clear sky.
In today's time, you might not go facing off giant mammoths, nor will you splash in rivers after fishes you'll be having for dinner. However, you could be an explorer, you could be a king, you could even be an alien, in what technology has brought us as something called games. Those experiences are fake, yes. But ultimately, this is what we had sacrificed for comfort. Maybe not all of us, but most.
Those lovely freedom you get in ancient times? That, too, we had sacrificed. But think again, weren't the lives of ancient people very much a routine too? Sure, they had a variety of things to do, instead of just keeping a job that makes you do the same thing everyday, but thinking of it, these two are actually one and the same. Having a job just means specialisation, instead of doing a veriety of things all by yourself. If you really wanted to swim in a river, by all means fly to some distant lands with clear springs and flowing rivers. I'd be contented with my swimming pool 5 minutes away. That is what we exchange for convinience.
And what about those free time they had? Well, every night, instead of busying yourself with new games or television shows, take a stroll in the park, and you might just find out how beautifully relaxed life is.
I find that too many people are too busy nowadays, to just lay back and slow down their pace of life. How does it feel like to lay down on the ground after a hard game of basketball, and to see the stars rush up to meet you? That is the time when you realise how deep everything is. I find that excitement in this boring routine is not about large adventures, but instead, it is the little things that make life great. Take a walk; breathe in deep; snuggle up onto your loved ones, and just pause to enjoy life. That's when life's interesting.
