My great essay on democracy.

Democracy creates stability in a society.

There are important factors leading to the stability of a society. The most important factors are social, economic and political stability. The most important criterion for a stable society is the social stability, because the people must settle down a peaceful living before they can work on to larger things and bring an increase in economics, and also that democracy affects mostly the social aspect of a society, whereby the people are able to directly choose their leaders.

I agree that democracy creates stability in a society to a large extent.

Firstly, the government is made up of leaders the majority of the people voted for. This would lead to lesser uprising or riots, because the government would have the support of the people, and govern the country accordingly. The people would decide who run the country, and also have a say in government policies.

Secondly, a truly democratic state gives equal power to all members of the society. This creates fairness and no man is better than the other. Prejudice is therefore not practiced. A consequence of this is that no one reigns over another and everyone is seen as equals. This serves to deny a formation of distinct social classes.

Thirdly, when all members enjoy their own freedom and rights, the population would be happy and rebels would be kept to a minimum.

However, democracy might not create any, if not reduce stability in some cases.

An example would be when the democracy has a lack of a responsible government. It is then possible for the rights of the minority to be abused by the majority. This would lead to segregation between the two groups, with the majority being the ‘tyrant’ and the minority being forced to obey the majority.

Sometimes, the minority might be made up of also a large number of people. For example, in Sri Lanka, the Sinhalese are the majority. However, there is still a large population of Tamils, who are forced to obey policies that cater for Sinhalese due to the larger Sinhalese population. There still might be a high chance of a revolt if the minority felt that they are being neglected.

Even so if there exists such a rule as ‘majority wins’ in democracy, we must consider that there will be unsatisfied people in all rules of government. Democracy in its core is actually utilitarianism, whereby decisions are made with the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of people in mind. This is always better than other forms of government, when some decisions bring about very little satisfaction and support from the public.

Thus, democracy is actually a step ahead of other types of government in bringing satisfaction to the most number of people, which in turn leads to stability within the country.

Therefore, in the social aspect of stability, I conclude that democracy does bring about stability to a society to a large extent.

Yes, it could be a great essay if you continue to edit it further? Fair attempt in parts, but need to strive towards perfection! Think this is still very much an early draft piece.
